Getting blood out of your mattress is actually a simple, effective process. Absorb as much blood as possible with a towel. Apply baking soda, wait, and remove. Spray with a mixture of water and vinegar. Blot dry with a towel.

3 ways to get blood out of a mattress

Removing a blood stain from a mattress isn't hard. In fact, you have several options available, and you can probably find most of the materials around your house!

  • Soak as much of the blood off of the mattress as possible with a towel. Sprinkle baking soda over the affected area. Apply a coating consisting of 50/50 cold water and white vinegar. Leave it there for 30 minutes. Vacuum away the residue.
  • Combine a half-cup of cornstarch, half-cup of hydrogen peroxide, and one tablespoon of salt. Apply the paste onto the affected area. Let sit for 30 minutes. Gently dab away the mixture with a towel.
  • Create a paste with one tablespoon of meat tenderizer and two teaspoons of water. Apply the paste to the area, and leave it there until it's dry. Vacuum away the residue.

Mattresses collect dirt! (And mites and sweat and blood)

Even if you've effectively cleaned up the blood stain, droplets are still in your mattress. This is in addition to the sweat, oils, and other contaminants that wind up on a bed over time.

You can tell when a mattress is too dirty because it will upset your allergies. You might wake up with a stuffy nose and watery eyes. It's a clear indicator you need to clean your mattress or replace it.

Is cleaning the mattress enough?

Even if there aren't noticeable stains, you should still clean your mattress every six months. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Do I need a new mattress?

While you should clean often, sometimes it's not enough. Particles can seep deep inside the mattress. You get rid of the stain, but a strange smell still emanates from the bed.

You can extend the longevity of your mattress by investing in a waterproof cover. But at the end of the day, it may just be time for a new mattress.

How can I find the right mattress?

  • Spindle Mattress ($2,500) - wicks away moisture to prevent sweat stains from building up.
