Private insurance companies and Medicare reimburse you for adjustable beds but only under certain conditions. Some companies consider them medical devices, while others like Medicare require a doctor to prescribe the base and state that it's medically necessary. Even still, you're only covered if you purchase a hospital-grade adjustable bed.

Will my private insurance cover an adjustable bed?

Adjustable beds serve some medical purposes and are beneficial for older people who live alone. Most private insurers cover them. Some insurers consider them a medical device while others require the adjustable bed to be prescribed by a doctor.

However, insurance companies usually won't cover any adjustable bed, only medical-grade hospital beds. If you do get a prescription from a doctor, you won't need to worry about sales tax.

Mattresses usually are not reimbursed by insurance companies because they're not deemed medically necessary.

How about Medicare?

Medicare Part B offers coverage for hospital-grade adjustable beds. It must be a hospital bed for Medicare to cover it. Once enrolled, you'll receive an 80% reimbursement for the amount spent purchasing the bed and are only responsible for 20% of the cost.

How to receive this coverage:

  • Enroll in Medicare Part B
  • A Medicare-enrolled physician writes a prescription stating that an adjustable bed is a medical necessity.
  • Medicare only pays for the bed if you purchase it from a Medicare supplier

Hospital bed alternatives that work great for seniors

Going through your insurance doesn't always provide you with the best value or savings. A lot of mattress companies sell adjustable bases with compatible mattresses for:

  • Low prices
  • Discounted bundles
  • Easy financing

What's even better, many of them come with a minimum of 100-nights (that's over 3 months!) to try the bases; so you can make sure they work for you.

If you get an adjustable bed through your insurer:

  • You won't have any base options
  • Your price comparing is limited
  • You'll need to pay for your bed all upfront, no financing
  • The hospital beds are not discrete and may be embarrassing

Companies that offer great adjustable bases and deals:

  • Tempur-Pedic
  • Saatva
  • Nectar
